History of Chia Seeds
While chia seeds have only recently been recognized as a modern super food, the seeds have a very ancient historical background. Chia plants (Salvia hispanica) grow in Central and South America. They were used for centuries by the Aztecs and Mayans due to their abilities of providing lasting satiation and energy. Actually, the word “chia†is the ancient Mayan word for “strengthâ€!
How are they so beneficial?
While chia seeds are probably some of the smallest seeds you’ll include in your diet, they are packed full of nutrients. They are full of phosphorus, calcium, and manganese. They are also an excellent source of nutritional omega-3 fats, antioxidants, and high-quality protein. Some research even concludes that these tiny seeds may decrease the risk of heart disease and Type 2 diabetes. While containing carbohydrates, the majority of these calories come from fiber. Fiber is a very necessary part of our diet, especially for our digestive system!

Some of you may already be asking if chia seeds can aid in weight regulation, or even weight loss. You’re absolutely right! As mentioned above, these little black seeds are filled with beneficial, and energy-providing calories. Chia Seeds have high fiber, high protein, and the ability to absorb large amounts of water when in liquid. This causes them to provide feelings of satiety, or fullness.

These seeds are remarkable easy to consume. Due to their properties, they do not need to be ground up and can be eaten whole or milled. Many celebrities and athletic companies, like Taylor Swift, Gwyneth Paltrow and Fleet Feet Sports swear by these “nutritional powerhouse†seeds. Men’s Health even provides many ways you can easily add them to your diet. You can add chia to oatmeal, cereal, smoothies, hummus, or salad dressings.
