First Official Trail Running Experience
Two days ago I participated in my first trail race. This race was held at Lord Hill Park in Monroe. There were several options on how many miles you could run ranging from 5 miles to a 50k (ultramarathon). Since it was my first trail race, I resorted for the 5 miles.
The Course
The 5 mile course had about a 750 ft elevation gain, had one huge hill to climb, and several rolling hills along the way. It didn’t rain during the actual race but the trails were extremely muddy, there were unavoidable puddles that went up to my shins, and the views were amazing. Trails were marked with flags on where you needed to make your turns but somehow I still managed to get distracted and follow someone that got lost as well. Getting lost was not a problem at all, we both ran back and found our way back to the right course. Although I got lost, I only added an additional .8 miles to my total distance.
My experience
Trail running is such a relaxing experience. The runners are extremely friendly and I didn’t feel rushed at all during the race. Although I got lost, I got a few moments to myself and those were one of the best moments I’ve ever had. I know I wouldn’t have had such a good experience without my support crew. My boyfriend, talked me through my nerves the night before, drove with me to the race, and waited out there until I was finished, he is truly my number one supporter! I also had a couple of friends out there that came to support me as well and another that also ran her first 50k that day! I know that without my support crew my experience would have been as amazing as it was. Thank you, you guys are the real MVPs!
Final Thoughts
Would I recommend trail running?
That’s a definite yes. Trail running is different from road racing. I realized that it was a lot easier on my knees and hips. The people were very friendly and the scenery was so relaxing. If you haven’t participated in your first trail race I highly recommend trying it!
