Winter Sports Guide
Happy February!
With Snowmageddon loosening its grasp on our region, everybody goes back to work, back to the grind. Â Kids were running around the house throwing scissors at everybody, pets were dying to go back to their dog parks, and those in Queen Anne started writing their own obituaries in case they never made it off the hill again.
We have heard from countless folks who lamented the snow for interrupting their daily life. They couldn’t work out! They threw their backs out shovelling snow (or watching an infinity cycle of Netflix)…… but the story was the same. They felt trapped, with no outlet for fun! Fortunately the snow here means that our mountainous playground also got a healthy dose of the white stuff.
Here is a short guide for those looking to get outdoors, to try something new, to stay active despite the weather!
Snowshoeing
For those looking to put some larger versions of their feet on their feet and walk where they couldn’t otherwise, snowshoeing is an amazing way to explore the mountains in winter. There are so many places to explore! REI will rent them to you (or sell them), you don’t need a ton of equipment- just a will to brave the elements. Snoqualmie pass has a robust learners program to help first timers see the wonders of winter about an hour from Seattle. (Link for more information)
Ice Skating + Hockey
With the pending arrival of a Seattle NHL team in 2021, now is the best time to strap some blades on and learn to skate! Not sure if there will be tryouts- but why not be ready?? Here is a list of the closest public ice skating rinks around the area
X-Country Skiing
Quite possibly the best cardiovascular workout you can do (sorry snowshoeing) outdoors, Cross Country skiing is the toned-down version of downhill, but you do the work. The positives are: no long lines, more affordable equipment, and far more family friendly! Take back Seattle’s Scandinavian roots and try something new. Both Stevens Pass and Snoqualmie have amazing programs, where you can glide away your winter blues.
Winter Trail Running
With all of the amazing parks in the city of Seattle, and amazing greenspaces on the east side- winter running can be an easy way to get outside, get some exercise, as well as keep the miles up otherwise wasted on the rubber-sidewalks-that-move at the gym. Here are some key ingredients for enjoyment: spikes, jacket etc
Safety
If you’re going outside this winter, in addition to a Sno-Park pass and discover pass, once you leave your car you are in avalanche country. Simple tips for those not familiar with weather changes: Don’t go alone, tell people where you are going (even writing it on a note on your windshield of your car), and BE PREPARED. Most accidents are preventable, and most Search-and Rescue missions can be made easier if you are properly trained.  The Mountaineers are an amazing group in the Puget Sound, providing excellent resources and training
Staying in the City
So many activities in Seattle to do, even in the winter. If you’re dressed right, and with the right Crew (pun intended)- it’s a great way to stay social, fit, and happy in the NW!
- Indoor spaces: Showers/Towel Service/ Dog friendly- and an amazing vibe and Community, Cue Crossfit is an excellent downtown option for those commuting into the city!
- Running: Group Running in the winter is a great way to stay connected, and keep your miles where they need to be. Here is an incomplete list.
- Rowing: SNOW CAN’T STICK TO THE WATER! Lake Washington Rowing Club is the go-to for all things Crew in Seattle. There are other great groups to row with, both in Seattle and on the east side- jump in the lake/canal/slough and get some exercise before or after work.
- Cycling: Go drink some coffee, meet some friends- and join a cycling group. Seattle has a ton of clubs to meet your needs. From elite teams, to fun ride-abouts, try one of these on for size .
- Most importantly: just get outside, dress for the weather, and go for an old fashioned walk. waterproof boots, waterproof pants, and a waterproof jacket are really all you need!
Have fun out there, be safe!
